Did you know that Anacortes hosts one of the oldest and largest festivals in the Northwest? The Anacortes Arts Festival, happening August 2-4, 2024, is a work of art in and of itself, created over the decades by dedicated and talented people. You won’t want to miss it!
Anacortes Art Festival: The Beginning
In 1962, Dr. Jack Papritz suggested to a group of arts patrons that Anacortes have an arts festival, similar to the ones he had seen in Europe. While those present were a bit hesitant, and so was the Chamber of Commerce when they found out money would be needed for the endeavor, Papritz pressed on and July dates were set.
Just two blocks of Commercial Avenue were dedicated to that first Anacortes Arts Festival. That first year, 107 artists and crafters would line Commercial between Eighth and Sixth streets.
“Pictures of the Past,” by Wallie Funk does a deep dive into the history of this incredible festival and is definitely worth the read!
The 2024 Anacortes Arts Festival
Fast forward 62 years and this year’s Anacortes Arts Festival will feature over 220 artisans! Categories include Ceramics; Crafts for the Senses; Fiber; Food; Glass; Jewelry; Metal, Sculpture and Garden Art; Painting, Drawing and 2D Mixed Media; Photography; Wearables, Leather; and Wood, Gourds and Furniture.
There will also be 88 fine artists featured at the Art at the Depot – Fine Art Exhibition. “Festival Fine Art Show is a museum quality exhibition that has become a premiere event in the Northwest,” shares Communications Manager Kate Helmreich. “This Juried Exhibition features regional artists working in both 2D and 3D mediums. Our jurors take pride in selecting a diverse, well-balanced show. In 2024, the fine art show moves to the historic Depot Art Center located 2 blocks east of the main Festival thoroughfare.”
“Since its inception in 1962, the Anacortes Arts Festival has grown from a small community event into a renowned showcase of artistic talent, attracting visitors from near and far,” shares Executive Director Meredith Mcllmoyle. “What began as a modest display of local art has blossomed into a festival featuring a diverse array of artists, activities, performances, and creative opportunities. Our commitment to fostering a love for the arts and supporting artists remains as strong as ever, and we are proud to continue this tradition with the same passion and dedication that has defined our festival for over six decades.”
In addition to the art, there are plenty of hands-on kids’ activities to keep the little ones busy. “Hands-on art projects, interactive performances, and entertaining activities allow youngsters to express themselves and enjoy the festival in a way that is tailored just to them,” shares Kate.
When you get hungry, fill your belly with delicious treats from the many food vendors. You can find just about anything you could want at the Anacortes Arts Festival, from corn dogs and funnel cakes to Hawaiian barbecue and Asian seafood. “Festival food will be a combination of food trucks, food booths and local restaurants,” shares Kate. “Downtown restaurants with outdoor seating areas will augment dining opportunities in the heart of the Festival thoroughfare. We offer beer, wine and spirits at two Festival locations.”
While you eat, head to the two stages for live entertainment each day of the Anacortes Festival. The Main stage will feature Fidalgo Danceworks, Pete Keating and the Renslow Trestle, Adrian Xaxier & Ska Island, Tom Buenger, Lazy Acres and more! The Jazz Stage has programming provided by the Manieri Foundation and is sure to put you in a good mood with sounds from Herding Kats, Jean Lenke Summer Jazz Band, Pearl Django, Bellingham Dixieland All Starts and more.
“As you stroll through the festival, don’t forget to visit the Working Studios, where you can watch artists at work,” advises Meredith. “From live painting and chainsaw carving to wood carving and metalworking, these demonstrations provide a fascinating glimpse into the creative process. You may even pick up a few tips and techniques to try in your own artistic endeavors.”
